Tomorrow it begins
Ok, I start class (9-noon daily) on Monday, and have been holding on to that as “restart day”. (Because let’s get serious, life is really about trying to minimize time between these restarts sometimes…)
But why not today?
“Because I don’t wanna.”
But you’d be one day closer
“Because half of today is already gone. What kind of start would...

Hey world, I'm back.
Fuck losing weight.
Fuck it all.
My new goal is to get my athlete back. The person who can walk around holding her head high, knowing that she could take any comer.
Last week, I went to yoga every morning, and ran 2 miles to and from CrossFit each day. Best week ever. This weekend I’ve been working hardcore on giving myself more stretch marks with all the junk I’ve been...

Good morning! Today I promise myself...
…I will eat with purpose and planning all day. This includes cooking a meal for dinner, not eating microwaved turkey bacon and cans of green beans and beets (ahem, last night).
…I will complete a room before and after.
…I will abstain from all television and movies.

I'm baaaa-aack!
Ok, so after taking the recovery time I needed (turned out to be more than I wanted it to be, but in hindsight about what I should have expected), things coming back on track.
The big thing to accomplish this week is getting the house in order. So tomorrow my goal is to do a before-after of one room in the house. Embarrassing as it may be…

I ate 1,200 calories in almond butter today. And...
When I screw up, I punish myself with food. It’s a little bit comfort eating, but especially now, it happens because I reach a point where I feel like it’s what I deserve.
I’ve put on 2-3 pounds since Thursday as a result of this + no exercise + stress/depression.
But I’m not going to beat myself up. I’m still ahead of where I was in January, and I didn’t...

Rough patch
So, after a great week last week, I landed flat on my face this weekend.
Found out my fiance’s cousin was in Vail for the weekend, from New York, so we headed up there for Saturday and Sunday nights to visit. Decided to take the weekend off.
Unfortunately, ran out of my depression medication on Thursday (I’ve been on it for clinical depression since I was 14, not normally a...

Hidden Sodium in Healthy Foods
Whole Wheat Bread:
One hundred percent whole grains are high in fiber and help to lower cholesterol and prevent heart disease. Unfortunately, many bread manufacturers are adding too much salt in their recipes, negating the bread’s health benefits. Slices can average from 260 to 400 mg, and considering most people have 2 slices at a time, the sodium can add up. There are brands that provide...

Yesterday's treadmill run: 4.75 miles, 51:26
Ok, so at the moment I am running as slow as molasses. But ah don’ cayre :)!
I listened to Born to Run on the treadmill, and yesterday moved on to The Widow Clicquot, about the female founder of Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin champagne (it’s my favorite; in fact we’re using their trademark yellow as one of our wedding colors this summer) in the early 1800s. So far, seems pretty...

Paleo Summit: 23 Expert Presentations Over 8 days →
So, I’ve made it clear that while I may find benefit in eating paleo for periods of time, I think it is an arbitrary and unsupported set of rules. When people ask if I would recommend that they try it, I usually say no. Without doing it as part of a group, I think there are better ways to get the same benefits with less cost and less risk.
That being said, I am all about discourse :). I...

Small setbacks are not the same as failures.
So, I didn’t make it to WOD or strength yesterday. M-W-F I go to the 11:30am WODs, but on T-Th I have to go to the 5pm. Yesterday I got home from class and was too overwhelmed by all the things to do around the house, that I spent an hour cleaning (seemingly barely making a difference) instead of working out. Then I devoted some time to getting wedding ideas together to send to the planner.

5 Reasons to Ditch Energy Bars [Organic Authority]
They’ve infiltrated virtually every supermarket, convenience store, gym, yoga studio and even sporting goods stores. Energy bars are synonymous with healthy, quick and energizing food for these modern times, relied upon by millions for a fast, waxy-cardboard-esque-quasi-tasty boost of calories, protein and carbs. But before you power through your next Power Bar, have you considered...

The first three are excellent boosts to my current goals. The last one… not so much :)....

Love Yourself: My mom just called the type of food... →
On one hand, I find stories like this incredibly sad. The complete lack of understanding that so many people in this country have when it comes to their health, and how their health affects more than just how they look.
On the OTHER hand though, it makes me smile. A lot :). It gives me hope that there are people willing to make actual changes, even when it’s hard.

WOD + yoga
Today’s WOD was 3 rounds for time, of 40 stick jumps, 30 abmat sit-ups, 20 35# OHS, and 5 wall walks.
It went crappy. Worst workout I’ve had in weeks. Low energy, low focus. BUT, it got done. So congrats me :).
This evening I did an hour class of sort of power yoga/vinyasa (called “Yogaworks-inspired) and it was lovely.

A post-paleo world
Had a great discussion with my fiance on Friday about what we want to eat in two weeks when the paleo challenge is over. We decided to add back in legumes, honey, brown rice and whole-wheat pasta. Small amounts (less than half a serving at a time) of dairy and sugar will also be allowed (butter, parmesan cheese on top of fish, low-fat feta in my eggs etc). We also decided to not have any eating...

Before and After pictures, and the timeline for...
I am a mature, well-educated and intelligent woman. That doesn’t mean however, that I don’t sometimes succumb to misconceptions.
Yesterday I found myself frustrated with my progress over the last few weeks. I did a lot of research, rethought my nutrition, and then had a realization:
Wasn’t this week when I commented that I was finally being able to push myself during WODs?...

Scale stagnation: The question of calories
So, it’s been two weeks since I saw any progress on the scale. Or felt like I was leaning up. What was working is no longer. Scale read 147 this morning. I’ve been really good with eating (one evening of paleo-time-off pigging out for the Super Bowl is not responsible), but now I have to decide on a course of action. Do I:
Continue as I have been and assume that progress is being made even if...

Today's WOD was lovely :)
15, 12, 9, 12, 15: wall ball (10# for me), burpee box jumps, knees-to-elbows, shuttle runs across the box.
Could have done heavier for the wall ball, but the next step up was 16, and… oh shut up me! I totally should have tried 16#. I’m sorta stoked at the moment that things are improving a little (it’s all you can ask for right? Just a little). I feel like I’m slowly...

Struggling right now.
Nothing dramatic, no particular setbacks- just general blase lack of motivation I suppose.
I think the big thing is that I feel like a waste it I don’t get to CrossFit 5 times a week. I really really need that consistency. But my schedule has other ideas. I’ve been only going like 4/week, which really just doesn’t feel like enough to really progress.
Also, for the first time...

Reminders that are obvious, but necessary
Make the Portion and Calorie Cut
“Americans have completely skewed ideas about portion size. No other country on earth offers portions as enormous as the ones here. Honestly, go anywhere else in the world and order a meal. You’ll see the difference.
We’re conditioned to believe that more equals better. Just look at the endless marketing of fast food; we’re constantly...

Almond Butter: We need to break up.
Dear Almond Butter,
You’re really great. You have a lot to offer- you’re even paleo-friendly! But things are too hot and heavy. We need to cool off. What I’m trying to say is… you can’t stay at the house any more. I’m sorry it had to come to this. It’s not you, it’s me. I just can’t be trusted when you’re around.
Love,
Me

When I got back from winter break, I began hitting the treadmill for half marathon training the week before I headed back to CrossFit. While it was reeeaal slow, I was able to check off a 35 minute ‘easy run’ no problem at all.
Then I started the Cross-Fit/paleo challenge.

Deception Diet: How Optical Illusions Can Trick...
Buy smaller dishes. The average size of an American dinner plate has increased almost 23 percent since 1900, according to Wansink and Van Ittersum. They’ve shown that people using smaller dishes overestimate the size of their servings, even as they serve themselves less food. Contrasting colors between the food and dish, and between the dish and table, enhance the effect.

I do love my cheese. Except stinky cheese :P
Once this challenge is done, I plan to work on reducing the amount of dairy in my diet as much as possible. Eliminating it isn’t the goal; just cutting back on the role it plays in my diet. This isn’t because I think I will particularly be healthier without dairy (I have always eaten low-fat dairy, not full-fat), but holy crap does dairy usually push my buttons to eat too much of...

Yesterday I just wanted to stay in bed.
I did not want to WOD yesterday. I got home from a long day of classes, after a crappy night’s sleep, and just wanted to curl up under the comforter. So I did. And I burrowed, and thought about the possibility of just staying there until dinner. But my conscious did its best. It nagged, it cajoled, it reminded me what I get out of CF and that once there I would probably even like it.
So I...
